HPC Core

High Performance Computing and Informatics (HPC) core facility is an indispensable infrastructure for biomedical research institutes that feature an “IT + BT” fusion strategy. Advances in high-throughput technologies now allow genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and “living dark matter” data to be generated and accumulated at unprecedented speed, appearing in diverse modalities—sequence, structure, cell, image, phenotype, and text, which makes modern biomedical research enter the data science era. Unlocking the hidden codes of health and disease within these massive datasets demands a data-driven paradigm; the associated storage, processing, and integration tasks consume enormous compute and storage resources. On the other hand, understanding and predicting molecular properties and biochemical reaction mechanisms in living systems, modeling and simulating macromolecular structures and dynamics, and performing virtual screening and design of drug-like molecules all rely on quantum-mechanical, Newtonian-mechanical, or empirical-statistical computational methods that are computationally extremely intensive. Moreover, booming AI technics are also being deployed across every research domain; local training and deployment of biomedical AI models likewise demand vast AI-computing capabilities.

The HPC core facility is equipped with a high performance computing cluster and various scientific software suites. It provides multi-level “dry-lab” services for basic and applied research including theoretical chemistry, molecular simulation, bioinformatics, computational biology, drug discovery, medical imaging, AI, etc.
